Here is the first of many videos to come that will introduce you to all things building science! Our goal is to educate and inform you on ways to transform your home to be more energy efficient and sustainable. This first video is about Energy Recovery Ventilators both in existing and newly constructed homes. Breathing fresh, clean air is so important especially during the long winter months here in the northeast. We'd love to know what you think...please leave questions or comments below! Feel free to check out future videos on our youtube channel!

In 2016, the Whitbeck team created the High Performance Lab. This model home features various cut-aways and see-through sections, that give you an inside-look at how high performance wall systems, floors, HVAC, insulation and more are constructed and finished. This model home was constructed on the site of our first showcase of homes property and then transported to Orlando in 2017 and 2018 for the Home Builders Association International Builders Show. Thank you to all the sponsors who made this project possible! Check out the time lapse video of it's creation and a small sneak peek into the model at the IBS the beginning of this month! You have a water leak!
If you can locate the highest concentration of ants, or follow their path, they will lead you to the water source. This is often a roof leak, so the "nest" will probably be somewhere in a “drip line”. Carpenter ants, unlike termites, have no ability to digest cellulose(wood) However, after it becomes water-damaged they will forage around inside the wood, feeding off of fungi and other bits of food. Boric acid is effective, but I have seen big problems arise when attics are indiscriminately dusted, and the corrosive dust gets transferred to the breathing space of little children through leaking heating and cooling air ducts. Dry the conditions out completely, replace the damaged wood and your ants will disappear. Be sure to check the wet area for water damage, dry rot (a type of fungi) and mold. Dishwashers can interrupt the visual flow of a beautiful kitchen.
